Chapter 1056, Howell MI

Livingston County, Spencer J Hardy Airport (KOZW)

December

 President's Column

Hello to all. For those members who are "Snow Birds" and are headed down south don't forget to prep your engine for storage throughout the winter months. Fully fuel the tanks, change engine oil to a cold-weather grade, cover the aircraft with appropriate covers, check and maintain the battery and install pitot tube and static covers.

For those flying through the winter don't forget to check the tire pressure before flight and use appropriate blankets and/or heaters to keep the engine warm so the engine will be easier to start.

See you at the Christmas Party.

EAA Chapter 1056 December 2024 Newsletter

Respectfully submitted by Kurt Immekus

Steve started the December meeting with the announcement of the unfortunate passing of Paul Streng November 29th. The family has requested a private service. You can make a donation in his name to the Howell Carnegie Library.

He was an enthusiastic participant in our chapter and a major contributor to our projects. He will be sorely missed.

Christmas Party

We would like to remind everyone about the Christmas party December 13th at Lakeland country club. If you still plan to attend, let Steve know as soon as possible and bring your $25.00 fee to the event. We currently have 33 people signed up so it will be well attended.

As a result of Steve’s participation in the EAA Leadership Seminar we were able to get name tags for all chapter members. The ones already assigned are magnetically posted on the Hanger refrigerator door. If you are a current member, you can request one from the chapter and one will be made for you. We have a total of fifty available so I doubt if we will run out soon.

With the loss of Paul, the position of Chapter secretary was left open. Show of hands vote was taken and Kurt Immekus was given the job of secretary. It was considered an obvious choice considering he already takes notes at the meetings for the newsletter.

With this change there was a position left open for an “at Large” board member. Gary Konrad has volunteered to fill that open position. Thank You Gary!

PRESENTATIONS

AIRCRAFT ICING

A video was shown about the dangers of aircraft icing. I didn’t realize there were so many varieties.

The four main types are Rime ice, Clear Ice, Mixed ice, and SLD run-back Ice. SLD stands for “super-cooled liquid droplets. Descriptions of all were included in the video.

The question was asked; What is more dangerous, wing and tail ice or propeller ice?

The answer was propeller ice. Consider this, if there is ice on the wing and tail, you still have some thrust and can hopefully maintain flight. If you lose thrust from propeller ice, what then?

When encountering Ice, what is the best immediate option?

A) Do a 180 degree turn and fly out of it.

B) Climb

C) Descend

D) Panic

The answer given in the video was C. They felt getting to a lower warmer air was the best option.

Changes in Basic Medical

There was short presentation about the changes in “basic medical” requirements and allowances.

The most significant allowances were an increase in aircraft weight limits from 6000 pounds to 12,500 pounds. The other was to raise the number of total occupants of the aircraft to 7 from 4. That’s a big change.  The upper airspeed limit is 250Kts and upper altitude limit is 18000 FT.

There are currently 80,000 pilots participating in Basic Medical.

CHAPTER MEMBER PROJECT REPORTS

Rick Hubert

He is currently selling his Bearhawk and his Cub. Contact Rick if interested

Gary Konrad

Nothing new to report

Jeff Kemp

Still working on his ultralight project. He has ordered his engine from AIRCONCEPTION. It is a two stroke out of France. It weighs 30 pounds and produces 38 HP and 240 Lbs. of thrust from the factory recommended propeller.

Ron Stonewall

Ron is working on the right wing of his Wagabond project in his garage. He has been accepted to attend the EAA leadership workshop this spring. Congratulations Ron!

Fred Liskovec

Fred has been re-certified and given permission to continue as an FAA certified aircraft inspector. Excellent news.

Tom Evanoff

Tom is not flying at the moment. Getting ready to head south for a few weeks. Tom has replaced a water damaged ceiling tile in our clubhouse. Much appreciated.  We got a chuckle out of it when Gary Konrad showed up just after the work was done and cleaned up the mess. Tom and Steve came back to clean up later and were surprised to find out someone had already done it. That’s Chapter efficiency!
