Chapter 1056, Howell MI

Livingston County, Spencer J Hardy Airport (KOZW)

April

Presidents Column

Hello Everyone

Spring is just around the corner…I think everyone is looking forward to getting back in the airplane and flying to those $100 dollar hamburgers and the pancake breakfasts. Make sure you do a good preflight if your plane has been inactive over the winter months.

We have a number of events scheduled for the spring and summer months. We will be kicking them off with the trip to the Gilmore Museum on the 16th of April. I'm looking forward to checking out all the antique cars and having lunch in the period dinner. The next event will be the “International Learn to Fly Day” which we are participating in with the “Flying Start” event like last year. Of course there is Osh Kosh AirVenture in July.

We are looking to host a Zenith Rudder Build Workshop in October which will be a great way to close out the flying events and possibly add members to our EAA club and expand our presence in the area.

See you next month.

EAA Chapter 1056 meeting April 2025

Respectfully submitted by Kurt Immekus

April’s meeting began with a review of the scheduled future events. The attendance was very good this month. No final count but I’d estimate around 15- 20

Gilmore Museum

We have scheduled a trip to the Gilmore Museum in Hickory Corners Michigan. One of the premier auto museums in the country. The visit is scheduled for April 16th. Plan on arriving around 10AM if you want to participate. Let Steve know if you are coming so we can look for you.

Cabin Fever dinner

This is something we do each spring to start off the summer. Its later this year but a good time is had by all. This year’s event will be at Block Brewing in Howell on May 31st. Plan on arriving at 6PM. It’s an open menu on your own. We did it this way this year since it is hard to predict how many will attend. Plus, you can get whatever you want to eat!

Flying Start Program

Our flying start program last year was very successful so were doing it again this year. For those who aren’t familiar, it is an introductory flight program for adults

who may want to consider aviation as an activity. Either flying or building or both. The date will be May 17th at Howell airport. See flyingstart.org for details

Zenith Flying club

The Zenith 650 flying club is finally close to realization. Dan Green has taken on that program and has enlisted four out of five partners for the club. So, last we heard, there is still one slot available. Contact Dan at greens4him@gmail.com

Rudder Workshop

Steve has had conversations with Zenith Aircraft about putting on a Zenith Rudder workshop at our club house hanger sometime in October. Zenith started doing this at their headquarters in Mexico, Mo. to get people interested in building Zenith Aircraft. They have done one remote session in San Antonio and would like to do more. We are excited about being considered to host one of these.

Aircraft safety on-board supplies, Steve Aupperle

Chapter Member Anthony Muldoon

Anthony recently completed his training as a flight engineer and is working for IFL.

IFL flies a 727 freighter out of Michigan. He gave us an interesting presentation about his training and the responsibilities he has before, during and after the flights. There are not too many of these 727 freighters still in use and they do

require a 3-person flight deck. They have been going to Mexico to deliver auto parts to the assembly plants down there. His training took place in Florida at Global One, where the only remaining 727 flight simulator resides. He is one of 5 727 flight engineers employed by IFL.

Sun in Fun Video

We watched a short video on Sun in Fun. Just about 5 minutes long. There was a final conversation about the new Mosaic program and what that means for general aviation.

Aircraft on-board supplies Steve shared with us what he carries aboard his airplane for supplies. There is first aid equipment along with weather related items. He also carries extra tiedown straps, flashlights, basic tools and the all-important duct tape!
