Chapter 1056, Howell MI

Livingston County, Spencer J Hardy Airport (KOZW)

July

Presidents Column

Hello Everyone,

Another summer flying season is upon us. I'm looking forward to “Oshkosh Airventure” which is fast approaching later this month. I will be attending as well as a couple of our members.

We now have a great looking sign on our clubhouse hangar which will help in expanding our presence in the area.  We are scheduled to host a Zenith Rudder Build Workshop in October with the help of a co-sponsor, Midwest Flying Machines. This is a great way to solicit membership and contribute to our aviation footprint in Livingston County.

See you next month on the 7th of August at Livingston County Airport.

Steve opened the meeting with these announcements.

He called attention to our new sign on the front of the building. Large enough to be seen from the road

The Zenith workshop will be held on Friday October 10th and Saturday October 11th with the workshop wrapping up around noon on Saturday.

There will be representatives from Zenith there to run the event along with representatives from Viking aircraft engines. We have also obtained a Co-Sponsor. Mid-West Flying machines. They are a Michigan based builders assist workshop company.

RVs and campers are welcome on-site during the workshop and the airport management has agreed to fix the pot-holes in the driveway before the event.

In addition, Gary Konrad has fixed the Gate!  Kudos to Gary.  We also intend to reseal the asphalt in front of the hanger doors. It is out for bid.

The event is expected to draw between 15 – 18 participants

A short video from Zenith was shown promoting the event.

Presentation

The approach and arrival at Oshkosh.

We started with members impressions of what it was like to fly into Oshkosh with personal experiences included. From this it was obvious that you must be on top of your skills to reduce the stress load.

Steve showed the brochure and approach procedures for various ways to arrive there. The brochure is available on the EAA web site. There is a QR code on the brochure with additional information.

We went over the different approaches.

You can also get information/ chart for the Chicago Fly-way. It was suggested to use flight following for this leg of the approach.

We saw a great video of the “Fisk” approach from the first approach point all the way to touch down. Very well done.

We also saw a short video narration of the 5 most common mistakes people make when approaching Oshkosh.  Scary!

Member Projects

Anthony and Katelyn just got back from their Honeymoon! An Alaskan Cruise.

Congratulations to them. In addition, their 172 ‘annual’ has been completed. Another milestone event!

Jeff Kemph Flew his RV 7 three times this month. He has been busy working on his Part 103 ultra lite. It weighs in at a whopping 263 pounds.

Gary Konrad plans to go to Oshkosh in his RV7.

Roger Powlison has returned to our Chapter after an extended absence. Good to have him back. He is looking for a Cessna 120/140 to buy. He has sold his motorhome and wants to return to flying.

Chris Peretto has not yet flown the flying club Zenith. He has been out of town. The plan is the use the transition instructor to train the club pilots. One of which is also a CFI. Thereby current and future club members can be trained by him.

Fred Liskovec gave us some information on putting a different engine on your home built. It is subject to a 5-hour flight test before being considered for extended flight. He also discussed setting tension on aircraft with “flying wires”. Apparently there used to be an aircraft grade Tensiometer for this purpose available. Hard to find these days.

Greg Lask was in New Orleans recently to attend a work-related event and had a chance to visit the WW2 Museum.  Liked it.

Bruce Pratt plans to fly his Cozy to Oshkosh and is staying at the “Dorms” They have re-opened for the event this year.

Jordan Perko finished his on-line ground school and plans to start taking lessons at Ann Arbor flyers.
