Presidents Column
Hello Everyone
Once again, our chapter meeting was held offsite as we decided to visit the “Warbirds of Glory Museum” at Oakland Southwest Airport. It has been quite some time since I had seen “Sandbar Mitchell” the B-25 bomber. (maybe as long as 10 years ago) Wow! What a nice facility it was and more professional looking then the last time I saw it at the Brighton Airport. These people you can tell are very dedicated to the mission at hand. It was great seeing all the hard work that had been completed to date. The museum part was also new and had many artifacts from the era. We enjoyed it immensely and look forward to the day when it actually flies.
See you next month on the 6th of March at Livingston County Airport.
EAA Chapter 1056 February Chapter meeting
Respectfully submitted by Kurt Immekus
Chapter 1056 Secretary
On February 6th our chapter meeting was held at the “Warbirds of Glory” Museum at Oakland/Southwest Airport (Y47) formerly New Hudson Airport. The museum is the home of Sandbar Mitchell, a B25J Mitchell bomber that was recovered off a sandbar near Fairbanks Alaska. We were given a tour of the building and an informative presentation given by Pat Mihalek the museum director. Along with our EAA chapter we were fortunate to have members from Chapter 55 attend from Mason Michigan. All of us were impressed by the knowledge gained and the scope of the project. We had 9 members from chapter 1056 and several from Chapter 55 in attendance along with a few guest including my daughter Sarah and my friend Bob Elert who has volunteered at the museum previously.
Prior to the meeting we all had a great meal at the New Hudson Inn. A historic restaurant first opened in 1831! It is less than a mile from the airport on Grand River Avenue. It is thought to be the oldest continuously operated restaurant in Michigan.
A great time was had by all and we opened the door for more cooperative events between Chapters 1056 and 55 in the future.
Thanks to all that attended and a special thanks to the Staff at the “warbirds of Glory” Museum www.warbirdsofglory.com
