Young Eagles

Founded in 1992, the Young Eagles program is dedicated to giving youth ages 8–17, an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane. These flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers.

It’s the only program of its kind, with the sole mission to introduce and inspire kids in the world of aviation.

Today, the Young Eagles program has flown over 2 million kids.

On October 12, 2023, the EAA Chapter 878 -  Young Eagles "Build and Fly RC Airplane" Build portion was completed, coordinated by Tom Rammel, and the model eKADET is ready to fly.  The final build video with the boys and the eKADET airplane, plus some Night Vapor flying video is posted on YouTube.  Here is the link:        https://youtu.be/xVUy9mA8p6Q?feature=shared

Chapter 878 provides a Young Eagle event every 2nd Saturday April through September.    The event handles between 20 - 30 Young Eagles.  Check below to register for an upcoming event.   

EAA 878 Young Eagle Program

The National EAA Organization allows chapters to structure their Young Eagle events as they choose.   Some events are more unstructured however, we like a scheduled event.    We feel this makes the best use of the Parents, Young Eagles, Pilots and Ground Support personnel’s time.    Therefore our events use the following format.

1. The event starts at 9:30 am the 2^nd Saturday of the month April – September.
   1. Parents please show up between 9:15 - 9:30 to sign in.  Our event requires pre-registration through the icon below.
   2. E-mail is used through the website so look for e-mails the day of the event prior to coming to the airport – if the event is cancelled due to weather or for other reasons the cancellation will be done via an e-mail.
      
      
2. At 9:30 – 9:45 the Young Eagle Coordinators will assign the pilot to the Young Eagle.
   
   
3. At 9:50 All Young Eagles will go with their pilot to the plane they will fly in for a preflight of the plane.
   1. Parents are allowed to go through the pre-flight procedure and take pictures during this time.
      
      
4. Once pre-flight has taken place the Air Marshal will bring back all Young Eagles and Parents that are not in the first flight.
   
   
5. The 1^st group will go for their flight and the next group(s) will wait their turn to fly.
   
   
6. After the flight the Young Eagles will collect their log book and certificate.
   
   
7. Pilots will be available after the event to answer questions about flying, flight instruction, etc.

Kendra has flown at four EAA 878 Young Eagles events with Greg Beyer, Ray Svobodny, and Greg Thomes—most recently on August 14, 2021. Her first flight in 2019 gave her free access to Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course. After completing 50% of this ground school course, the EAA/Young Eagles program awarded her a certificate for a free hour of flight instruction, which she completed with Jim Shadduck (pictured) on August 25, 2021.
