President's Message:
Hey there fellow pilots,
Spring has finally arrived — longer days, greener fields, that perfect morning calm before the afternoon builds, and the unmistakable feeling that the sky is calling us back after winter's timeout.
It's an exciting time to dust off the wings, but let's keep it real: spring weather loves to keep us humble. Those gusty crosswinds straight out of winter's playbook, pop-up thunderstorms that seem to explode out of nowhere, sneaky low-level wind shear, and rapid visibility changes are all part of the seasonal game. The air is alive and unstable — beautiful one minute, sporty the next.
A few reminders as we head back into the circuit:
Give your bird a thorough spring preflight — not just the usual walk-around. Check for winter's leftovers: tire pressure, fuel caps, brakes, dried-out seals, critter nests, old fuel, sticky controls, and make sure that annual (or condition inspection) is current.
Knock the rust off with a safety pilot or CFI before pushing your personal limits. A spring checkout or biennial flight review session is never a bad idea — especially for crosswind work.
Weather briefings — do them early and often. Spring fronts move fast; build a habit of checking forecasts, TAFs, and convective outlooks like it's your pre-takeoff checklist. Have alternates and escape options in mind.Fly conservative personal minimums at first. That beautiful VFR day can turn marginal quicker than you can say "cumulus build-up."
And most importantly — enjoy it. Take the extra scenic route, chase a $250 hamburger, show a friend or family member what we see up here. This is why we do it!
Wishing you tailwinds, smooth air, soft landings, and many happy hours this season!
Blue skies and safe flights to all of you!
Best regards,
Nick Papadopoli, President
