Young Eagles

The Young Eagles program gives youth ages 8-17 a free flight in a small, privately-owned airplane with a certified volunteer pilot with no cost or commitment to families: it's an experience of a lifetime.

The program was founded in 1992, and since then more than 2.5 million Young Eagles flights have been flown around the world. Many of today's pilots, engineers, and aviation professionals trace their path back to a single Young Eagles flight, just like the ones we fly right here in Central Ohio.

Each flight represents a local child experiencing general aviation firsthand. Our chapter has been introducing youth in central Ohio to aviation for decades. In 2025, Chapter 9 was ranked 4th in the nation for the number of Young Eagles flights!

What actually happens on a flight

A volunteer pilot from our chapter takes your child on a short flight in a small, privately-owned airplane. Each flight lasts 20-30 minutes, during which the pilot points out local landmarks and talks with your child about aviation, airplanes, and what it's like to fly. Parents can escort their children to the plane, take pictures, and then watch the flight path from the ground.

Is it safe?

Safety is the #1 priority at every Young Eagles event. All Young Eagles pilots hold a FAA pilot certificate, current medical certificate, and have completed EAA's Youth Protection Training and background check program. All aircraft have completed mandatory inspections by licensed mechanics. Flights only take place in good weather, under visual flight conditions. If conditions aren't ideal on event day or if a pilot is not comfortable, we don't fly. Safety always comes first.

What to expect when you arrive

A Young Eagles rally is a relaxed, family-friendly event. Here's how a typical morning unfolds.

1. Check in at the registration table Head to the airport's general aviation area and look for the Young Eagles signs. You'll sign a consent form for your child and get added to the flight roster for the day.
2. Explore the flight line while you wait Many events include a chance to walk the ramp, see different aircraft up close, and talk with pilots and chapter members. Check out the merchandise table and consider buying a shirt for your child's pilot to sign as a keepsake. 
3. Meet your pilot Your child will be paired with a volunteer pilot who will walk them through what to expect, answer any questions, and do a brief walk-around of the airplane together. This is a great moment for youth (and parents) who are curious or a little nervous.
4. The flight: 20–30 minutes in the air Your child boards the plane with the pilot for a flight over the local area. Flights are a predetermined route and stay within about 10 miles of the airport. Pilots explain concepts of flight and what’s going on in the plane as it’s being flown. Parents wait on the ground or watch from the observation area, if available.
5. Back on the ground: logbook signingAfter landing, your child's pilot will sign and date their official Young Eagles logbook. Your child will also receive a certificate for their flight, and this is a great time to ask the pilot any last questions. Each child earns a $300 online pilot training course with their logbook for free!
6. Before you leave, learn about our other events Find a member to talk to about weekly kit airplane build nights, monthly aviation-themed presentation meetings, and other chapter events.

Tip for parents: dress your child in comfortable, closed-toe shoes, and bring a camera. The view from a small plane over your hometown is something they'll want to remember.
