About EAA Chapter 648

Founded in 1978, EAA Chapter 648 is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based at Vance Brand Airport in Longmont, Colorado. We’re pilots, builders, mechanics, engineers, veterans, first responders, and aviation enthusiasts — all volunteering our time because we love this stuff and want to share it.

We believe the future of aviation depends on getting the next generation excited about it. That means putting kids in airplanes, funding training for students who can’t afford it, and showing up in schools and at community events to make aviation real and accessible.

What Your Support Funds

Young Eagles Flights

Free flights for kids ages 8–17, run two to three times a year. Each kid gets a preflight walk-around, a flight over Longmont with a volunteer pilot, a signed certificate, and a logbook. Every pilot is EAA-trained and chapter-certified through EAA’s Child Protection Program. The smiles at the end say everything.

Youth Scholarships

We fund local students pursuing flight training, ground school, A&P programs, and aviation-related STEM education. We also sponsor young people to attend EAA Air Academy in Oshkosh — a week-long immersive aviation camp. Chapter members also visit local schools and the St. Vrain Innovation Center to mentor students directly.

Safety Education

Flying safety is a top priority. We host mountain flying safety courses, and one of our members — a national EAA aviation board member — presents safety data and accident analysis at monthly meetings. We take this seriously.

Annual Fly-In & Community Events

Our annual Longmont Fly-In brings hundreds of people to Vance Brand Airport for aircraft displays, a pancake breakfast, a silent auction, and flight simulators. It’s one of the best public aviation events on the Front Range, and all proceeds go back into scholarships.

Fly-Outs, Tools & Community

We organize fly-outs to local and regional airports, sometimes with overnight camping. Our tool crib gives members access to specialized aircraft construction tools. And our monthly gatherings — held in hangars, schools, and wherever something interesting is happening — keep the community tight.
