We are moving into one of the best times of the year to fly. With cooler weather, calmer winds, and beautiful fall colors, it is the perfect opportunity to share aviation with friends or family who have been wanting to take that first step. On Saturday, October 24, our chapter is hosting a Young Eagles Rally specifically catering to students from The Innovation Center. We always need more pilots and volunteers to make these events a success, so please contact Mike Duggan to get involved. Continuing with our safety theme, this month’s main program tackles a critical transition facing the experimental community: safely operating our aircraft on today's unleaded aviation fuels. Every E/AB owner will ultimately need to verify that their entire airplane—not just the engine—is compatible with the specific unleaded fuel they intend to use. This requires knowing your aircraft at a materials level, from every component the fuel touches from the tank to exhaust, to any airframe material that might encounter an accidental spill. To support builders and pilots through this shift, Dan Berry developed a structured evaluation process that begins with understanding UL avgas manufacturers, then mapping engine and material compatibility resources. From there, he breaks down the major components of typical E/AB fuel systems and apply a disciplined methodology designed to reveal early indicators of incompatibility. The final step is evaluating the system holistically to mitigate the two primary risks: engine detonation and degradation of any material that contacts fuel. He will walk through how this process came together and how you can apply it to your own aircraft with confidence.
