April 13

Good morning members and friends of EAA Chapter 770!

It's been a rumor, but now it is official!  We will be hosting EAA's "Berlin Express" B-25 August 18-21!  Mark your calendars!

I've attached a photo of the beautifully restored B-25 made famous by the Doolittle Raiders who launched 16 North American B-25 Mitchell's from the USS Hornet in April 1942.  Here's a link to a YouTube video showing its first flight in April 2019 as it was nearing completion of its restoration.  I'd encourage you to view it so you can become familiar with "Berlin Express", how it got its nickname and other interesting information specifically about this aircraft!

We will be providing more details as time gets closer.  It is possible the arrival date may be the 19th instead of the 20th, but that will be determined as time approaches, based on ticket sales and other factors.  We are not listed on EAA's schedule yet, as they are still finalizing other stops after Air Venture, so you can't book a flight just yet, but I wanted to give everyone advance notice so you can plan accordingly.  It's the second weekend of the Illinois State Fair, so lots of people will be in town, and depending on the winds, will be flying over the state fairgrounds frequently that weekend. It should be a fun weekend!

Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
John Salz

March 22

Good bye 18-36

Got word yesterday that runway 18-36 will be removed beginning on Monday,  April 4th.  This has unfortunately been a target of the FAA for years due to hot spots and other safety issues.  My understanding is the FAA will no longer fund the cost of maintaining this runway based on their studies, and unfortunately, the airport would have been unable to sustain the expense of keeping it maintained indefinitely, so it's going to be removed.  Several other airports have already lost their 3rd runway over the past several years, and now it's our 3rd runway that is unfortunately going away.

As anyone flying recently knows, it was closed with all the snow for some time this winter, and when I was directed to use it as a taxiway the Sunday, it had some debris from the snow removal off the other runways on it.  So, if you want to get a few more take offs and landings on 18-36, you better plan to do it soon!

Have a good rest of your week!

John

From Marty

Hi John,

The Museum needs an aircraft painter, they are in the process of finishing the 1-1 scale Sopwith Camel and need someone that can paint fabric.  They have all of the products needed, they just need the talent.  Could you put this out to the Chapter and see if anyone responds.

Thanks!

Marty

Toys For Tots

Thanks to all who contributed to our Toys for Tots effort.  John was able to deliver the toys we collected to Sgt. Driscoll Saturday evening, but he was wearing a bad Christmas sweater instead of his USMC uniform, so he didn't get a photo with him as Ihe usually does...LOL!  He is the manager at Kay Jewelers in the mall, so if you were not able to bring a gift to the dinner Thursday night, feel free to drop it off at Kay Jewelers and tell him you're with EAA.  If you can't make it to the mall, drop them at any Toys for Tots location.  I know they appreciate it!

If you zoom in on the photo, you will see there are lots of airplane and helicopter types of toys. He commented how much the kids love aviation related toys, and we had quite a few this year.  So thanks again!

As we approach this Christmas holiday, I want to wish all of you a safe and healthy Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.  Please keep those affected by the tornados last week and all those serving in our military, first responders and healthcare workers in your thoughts and prayers, as well as those with health concerns during this season.

Scott Winningham will be holding our first VMC/IMC Club meeting on Jan 4th at 6:30 at Stellar FBO.  They will be the first Tue each month going forward.  The next chapter gathering will be the usual 3rd Thursday, location TBD.
Reminder emails will go out a few days before each event.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
