Web Editor

Cristian Barillas

EAA

Cristian is a 28-year-old native of Central Illinois, specifically from Clinton. From a young age, he was captivated by aviation, though he never knew about the opportunities available to young people like himself. For years, he believed becoming a pilot was something beyond his reach. That changed when, at 17, Cristian joined the Illinois Air National Guard as an Aircraft Mechanic working on the C-130. His journey in the military has been one of growth and dedication—after nearly nine years of service, he transitioned into the role of Aircraft Maintenance Quality Assurance Inspector and is now serving as an Air Operations Maintenance Controller with the 183d Wing.

Throughout his time in the Guard, Cristian has had the opportunity to deploy, earn both his Bachelor’s degree and recently complete his Master of Science in Aviation Management. His passion for flying led him to start flying at 21, eventually earning his Private Pilot License with an Instrument Rating. Cristian is deeply committed to giving back to the aviation community, especially to the next generation. He actively works to expose young people to the opportunities within aviation, something he didn’t have growing up, by being involved with organizations like the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), where he helps mentor and introduce youth to the vast possibilities the aviation world holds.

Recently, Cristian was honored to be selected as the web editor for his local EAA chapter, EAA Chapter 770. In this role, he is dedicated to enhancing the chapter’s online presence by creating a more engaging, informative, and accessible website. He plans to revamp the site to better showcase the chapter’s events, resources, and member achievements, making it easier for both new and experienced aviators to connect, learn, and get involved. Through improved content and streamlined functionality, Cristian aims to foster a stronger sense of community within the chapter and attract more youth to the exciting world of aviation.

Today, Cristian serves as a Maintenance Officer in his local flying club, Flying 20 SPI, and has recently been selected to train as a C-130 Pilot in the Air National Guard. In addition, heis an active member of Pilots and Paws, a community dedicated to using aviation to rescue animals in need.

Cristian’s journey reflects his unwavering commitment to aviation, personal growth, and giving back to the flying community. His story is one of persistence, passion, and service—qualities that have defined his career and fueled his aspirations both in the cockpit and beyond.
