Scott Winningham
Scott Winningham is a dedicated aviation enthusiast and a lifelong resident of Sherman, Illinois. His passion for aviation began in childhood, fueled by iconic aviation films like Top Gun and the Iron Eagle series, as well as the thrilling sight of F-16s from the local Air National Guard unit flying overhead. Some of Scott’s fondest memories include watching these aircraft with his aunt at the airport, complete with a blanket and a bag of Cheetos, and the unforgettable moment when a pilot returned his salute. These experiences, along with attending Air Rendezvous airshows and witnessing the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds perform, solidified his love for aviation.
Scott initially pursued a career as a firefighter, earning several State of Illinois certifications, but soon realized that aviation was his true calling. He enrolled in the A&P Mechanic Program at Lincoln Land Community College, where he felt immediately at home. While in school, Scott had the opportunity to take a ride in a T-34 Mentor, an experience that changed the trajectory of his career. During the flight, he was invited to take the controls, sparking his ambition to pursue flying as more than just a hobby.
Scott’s aviation journey has been marked by impressive achievements. He holds a Commercial Pilot's License with single and multi-engine ratings, as well as instrument ratings. He also earned his Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification and an Associate’s Degree in Aviation Mechanics from Lincoln Land Community College, along with a Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
A passionate member of the aviation community, Scott is a lifetime member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), as well as a member of Warbirds of America and the Flying 20 Flying Club. He actively contributes to his local EAA Chapter 770 as its Secretary, a role he embraced to make a meaningful impact. Scott also serves as Chairman for the chapter’s annual Wings & Wheels Fly-In & Car Show, which raises funds for youth and young adult scholarships related to aviation, helping members earn their private pilot’s licenses and attend aviation camps. As a Young Eagles pilot, Scott enjoys mentoring and inspiring the next generation of aviators by introducing them to the joys of flying.
Looking ahead, Scott aspires to grow the Wings & Wheels event into a signature community gathering, with the ultimate goal of bringing an airshow back to the city of Springfield. He also envisions hosting pancake breakfast fly-ins to further engage the community and provide opportunities for people to experience the thrill of flying.
Scott’s long-term goals include becoming a commercial pilot, flying either cargo or corporate aircraft, and earning Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) ratings to share his passion for aviation with others. His dedication to aviation, community involvement, and mentorship reflect his unwavering commitment to inspiring and supporting the next generation of aviators.
