EAA 74 was started in 1959, by Herb Redding in his home in the Pine Hills neighborhood of Orlando. Charter members were Herb (Piel Emeraude), Ken Cooper (Jodel D-11), Lloyd Kimmel (former manager of the Kissimmmee, FL Airport), Mel Littlefield (formerly with the Florida Fish and Game Commission), Vern Mixter (Baby Ace), and Vic Wendt (Baby Ace). The chapter was formally incorporated in 1965.
EAA’s local chapters are about people, bringing together individuals interested in learning more about aviation as well as sharing their own knowledge. In its over 60-year history, EAA 74's members have participated in a variety of aviation activities
- 1969-72 - sponsored the Pitts Special Fly-In's at the Eustis airport each December
- 1975-80 - the chapter was a sponsor of the Citrus Fly-In's held at Kissimmee Airport, Bob White Field and Sanford Airport
- 1975-99 - the chapter originated the first Orlando Air Fair, then co-sponsored the event with the airport and airport businesses, helping to promote aviation and our home base airport to the public with aircraft displays, aerobatic performances, and Young Eagles flights
In addition, chapter members are regular volunteers each year at Sun 'n Fun and AirVenture.
