Orientation and Organization of the Workspace
November 9, 2023 marked the beginning of one of the most ambitious and complex projects our chapter has ever undertaken—the construction of our own Van’s RV-12iS.
The first phase of the kickoff focused on a level-setting and orientation session for our eight students, their parents, and our instructors. During this session, we established clear expectations regarding attendance, communication, safe travel between the terminal and hangar, appropriate conduct and attire, and overall shop safety. All participants were required to review and agree to a “Code of Conduct” outlining these standards. Students were also issued a flash drive containing build plans and supporting documentation to download and review in preparation for upcoming work sessions.
Following orientation, the group proceeded to the hangar using the designated safe route to begin organizing the workspace. Storage bins were labeled, and thousands of fasteners and small hardware items were sorted and stocked. To conclude the day, students received a brief introduction to the power tools they will be using throughout the build, including their purpose and proper, safe operation.
This kickoff set the foundation for a safe, organized, and successful build program.
