There is no single path into aviation. Whether you are a young person ready for a first flight, an adult who has always wondered about learning to fly, a student seeking training support, or a builder looking for experienced guidance, EAA Chapter 1116 can help you find a practical next step.
Young people ages 8 to 17
Explore Young Eagles for information about free introductory flights with local volunteer pilots.
Adults curious about flying
Explore Eagle Flights to learn how adults can experience general aviation and begin planning a path toward flight training.
Students seeking training support
Chapter 1116 supports aviation education through the Ray Aviation Scholarship, the Davidow/Burks AMT Scholarship, and the Richardson Aviation Scholarship. Each program has its own purpose and application cycle.
Flight simulator practice
Through the generosity of Thermal Aviation and Dan Obradovich, Chapter 1116 offers access to a simulator room and several flight training devices, including a Redbird. Simulator access is available at no charge by advance arrangement for people working on an instrument rating, another certificate or rating, or structured proficiency practice. Contact Chapter 1116 before visiting so that access and supervision can be coordinated.
Pilot safety and WINGS credit
Chapter President Frank Brabec and active member Bill Williams serve as volunteer FAASTeam Representatives here in the Coachella Valley. Chapter 1116 is developing aviation safety presentations and pilot proficiency activities for the coming season and plans to seek FAA WINGS credit for selected programs. Explore WINGS and Aviation Safety to learn how the program works and find confirmed events when they are posted.
Aircraft builders and restorers
Our Technical Counselors can share experience and help builders think through construction, restoration, and safety questions.

Local aviation partners and resources
Aviation in the Coachella Valley is stronger when local organizations work together. The organizations below manage their own programs, schedules, and participation requirements, so please confirm current details with them before visiting.
Coachella Valley Radio Control Club (CVRCC)
The Coachella Valley Radio Control Club is one of Chapter 1116’s most important local aviation partners. Its free Saturday morning flight training program gives participants an opportunity to experience flying a radio controlled airplane with a certified introductory pilot instructor. A buddy box allows the instructor to take control whenever assistance is needed.
Training is currently listed every Saturday from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the CVRC Club airfield in Canal Regional Park, 89452 54th Avenue, Thermal. Because schedules and flying conditions can change, please check the club’s website before visiting.

Air & Space Forces Association, Palm Springs Chapter 134
EAA Chapter 1116 and AFA Palm Springs are building a growing relationship around aviation education and opportunities for young people. We are exploring ways to connect Young Eagles with AFA’s cyber education and broader aerospace outreach, helping students discover paths into flying, aircraft maintenance, engineering, cybersecurity, military service, and other aerospace careers.

Palm Springs Composite Squadron 11, Civil Air Patrol
The Coachella Valley’s local Civil Air Patrol composite squadron serves cadets and adult volunteers through aviation and aerospace education, leadership development, emergency services, communications, and community service. Young people ages 12 through 18 may apply to join the cadet program, and adults age 18 and older can contribute in a wide variety of flying and nonflying roles.
