EAA Chapter 1623

Spicewood, TX - Aviators of the Purple Sage

Charles Taylor Award

The Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award, presented by the FAA, recognizes the lifetime accomplishments of senior mechanics.  The award is named in honor of Mr. Charles E. Taylor, the first aviation mechanic in powered flight. Mr. Taylor served as the Wright brothers' mechanic and is credited with designing and building the engine for their first successful aircraft.

To be eligible for the Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award, recipients must have 50 or more years of civil and military aviation maintenance experience, 30 of these years must have been served as an FAA-certified mechanic or repairman.  Recipients may not have had any airman certificate revoked. Revocation of any airman certificate will disqualify a nominee for this award.

In addition to being an FAA certified mechanic in excess of 50 years, Bill has been a pilot and instructor since long before many of us were born.  For decades, he has repaired hundreds of airplanes and taught scores of students, supplying the field of aviation with knowledge and innumerable qualified pilots!

It is an honor and a privilege to have Bill Billingsley as a Master Mechanic at the Spicewood Airport.  Please stop by his hangar and congratulate him the next time you are at the airport!
