Passionate about aviation, Raquel embraces challenges and opportunities in special projects and business development. A private pilot, Raquel enjoys flying her Cessna 172M out of Lyncrest Airport (CJL5) in Manitoba. Her knowledge and relationships have been instrumental in advocating for Manitoba’s aviation industry as executive director for the Manitoba Aviation Council. Raquel has 24 years of experience as an entrepreneur in the travel and hospitality industry, serves as past-chairperson of the Air Cadet League of Canada (Manitoba), and Young Eagles Coordinator for EAA Chapter 63

Clark Morawetz is an airline captain on the Embraer E195 for a Canadian airline. He is also a Class Two flight instructor that conducts freelance flight training, ferry flying, and transition training. Clark is an Air Cadets alumn, former COPA board director, and is a current member of the EAA Canadian Council. He has 8,000 hours of flying experience on everything from gliders to jets.

Phillip (Phil) Johnson, from the Ottawa area, has had a strong interest in aviation since his childhood in the U.K. Like many of us, Phillip was a member of Air Cadets, and to be precise the 1480 Squadron, located in Dorking, Surrey, U.K. His first ride in a powered light aircraft was with the Air Cadets and was in a de Havilland Chipmunk. He also did some gliding from a winch tow at RAF Tangmere.

Phillip studied applied and theoretical physics in the U.K. before starting his career in the British defence industry. During his many business trips to the U.S., he learned to fly at Canastota Airport, New York, (1985) with a friend and colleague who was a flight instructor in Syracuse, New York. Learning to fly in the U.K. was an expensive endeavour, so he just topped up his training in the U.K. when necessary between business trips. Because the U.S. would not recognise his flight training hours done in the U.K., but the U.K. did recognise the flight training hours done in the U.S., Phillip took his check ride in the U.K. and then applied for his U.S. certificate on the basis of his U.K. licence.

After gaining his PPL Phillip became a member of a small flying syndicate in the U.K. flying a 1961 Piper Cherokee 140, G-AWPS, only to have the group ask him to find a better aeroplane in the U.S. while on travel. Eventually he found a Piper Warrior II that had a low time engine and a new King Air Avionics Upgrade. After agreeing on a price, he arranged a ferry pilot to fly the newly acquired Warrior back to the U.K. The ferry pilot opted to take the more direct route, so with a 100-gallon ferry tank in the back seat, he flew from Bangor, Maine, to the Azores in 14.5 hours with 16 hours of fuel on board. The Warrior arrived in the U.K. with no issues during the flight.

Hello, aviators! My family and I live in Waterloo, Ontario. I am a local business owner, community volunteer, Scout Leader, and an aviator.

I fly out of CPR5, Norm Beckham Bob Hewitt Field in Woodstock, Ontario, and it is my distinct pleasure to serve as the president for Woodstock Ontario Flying Club. Our 78 members bring an impressive and humble montage of characters, skills, aptitudes, and fun to our communal world of aviation.

My goal in joining the EAA Canadian Council is to help spread the joy of aviation in our communities so it can continue to flourish as a passion and career for our young people. The EAA Young Eagles and COPA Discover Aviation flights are just two of the fascinating aspects of aviation I am passionate about.

Learning to fly in the Yukon amongst the mountains is certainly a proud life achievement. Though, taking our son Willem for his first airplane ride at age two in a Piper Cub, and having him beg for more on landing, is the fuel that keeps me flying. Being a dad is my greatest thrill of all.

Yes, when I moved back to the flatlands of Ontario, I once called the tower for directions back to the field. I was lost with no rivers to navigate! He suggested I look over my shoulder and point the nose at the tower just three kilometers away. Of course, the pilots at CPR5 still giggle when I step in and out of the Cub without using the step. Folding myself into and out of that little yellow bird is like passing through the gateway to the sky. Surreal.

Like many, I became interested in flying once I had the time, when I was in my 50s, although I did attend the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration in my 30s. My daughter joining the Air Cadets probably helped stir my interest. Very soon after achieving my PPL I realized that there was more to life than renting, and I decided to build an RV-9A. Ten fairly solitary years later I finally flew my newly signed off homebuilt. Once an instructor flew the first hour, we flew the next four hours side by side. My rule of thumb had been to touch it every day I was home, otherwise it would never get finished.

I was invited to join the board of EAA Canada, and I subsequently took over editing our Canadian newsletter from Jack Dueck, who still attends AirVenture in his later years. My first month as editor was in September 2013, so I guess I’ve been enjoying the process for 11 years and plan to continue for a while yet.

Scott was born and raised in eastern Ontario and began his lifelong interest in aviation by joining his local soaring club at age 13. He earned his PPL at age 17, and after a business education, he joined the RCAF as an air transport logistics officer. After a 10-year military career he retired to become a professional pilot. He now flies for Air Canada and manages pilot training and qualifications at their leisure carrier, Air Canada Rouge. His passion for sport aviation never left him, and he still maintains a Class 3 instructor rating. Scott is a partner with a Piper PA12 aircraft and has completed a Pietenpol Air Camper, from scratch, over 17 very enjoyable years in his home workshop. He joined EAA in 1991 and has attended Oshkosh since 1994. His interests in participating in the Canadian Council are to help in any way he can to make aviation more accessible to youngsters, in same the way it was made accessible to him in the late 1970s. Scott is passionate about building aircraft, recreational flying, flight instruction, and fostering social connections in his group of enthusiasts.

Scott said, “my involvement and the value I bring to the advocacy role comes from the years of flight safety and human factors oriented training I was involved with at my airline. Whether it is overseeing an airline training program, flying a 200-passenger airliner in adverse weather, or instructing in a tailwheel aircraft on a grass field, the mitigation of threats associated with the operation do not change. Aviation is a safety-minded activity, and I bring my experience as a pilot and trainer to the advocacy role at EAA Canada Council and speak on behalf of my aviation peers. I hope to have a positive impact in the development and support of several Canadian General Aviation Joint Steering Committee [CGAJSC] working groups and promote the safety minded philosophies of the EAA in my work.”

Scott lives in Burlington, Ontario, and his aircraft are based at Flamborough Centre.
