Emmett "Leroy" Storey, 2nd Chapter President (1981) EAA 54151
Emmett Leroy Storey (1917-2016) was elected the 2nd President of then West Central Georgia Experimental Aircraft Association, Inc. in 1981, succeeding Bud Schuman.
He was born September 13, 1917 in Columbus, GA to William Howell Storey and Minnie Marie Martin. He dropped out of Columbus Industrial High School from 1936-39 to work at Martin Theatre and then the finishing plant at the Eagle & Phenix Mill to support his family. He went back to school after Mr. T. C. Kendrick, Principal of Columbus High School allowed him to enroll. He was able to get out early from school to work 2nd shift in the mill. He enlisted in the Navy as a Radioman during WWII. In 1952 he was stationed at Mould Bay, Prince Patrick Island, Canada as Senior American Executive Officer at a newly built Joint Canadian-US Weather Station 630 miles above the Arctic Circle. After returning to Columbus, he worked civil service at Fort Benning from 1953 till his retirement in 1973.
He was the action officer for the incorporation of the EAA 677 in the state of Georgia. He authored the initial bylaws, which he modeled after EAA 611 in Gainesville, GA. On December 18, 1979 a non-profit entity was established in Georgia as West Central Georgia Experimental Aircraft Association, Inc. The Articles of Incorporation were signed by President Bud Schuman (EAA 59262), Vice President LeRoy Storey (EAA 54151), and Secretary/Treasurer Dick French (EAA 146761). Leroy served as the first Vice President in 1980, President in 1981 and as Secretary/Treasurer in 1989 and was a regular contributor to the Gremlin Gazette.
