Since 1962, EAA Chapter 180 of Manasota has been a driving force in fostering aviation education, advocacy, and awareness in the Sarasota/Manatee region. Operating from Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ), our focus is on advancing aviation through educational events and discussions, collaborating with SRQ management, and running youth initiatives such as the Young Eagles program, held on the second Saturday of each month, and the Teen Build, part of the Teen Aircraft Factory of Manasota (TAFM).
Historically, we have utilized spaces and hangars borrowed or leased from local entities for our operations. However, as we grow and expenses rise, these options are becoming scarce and costly. Our goal is to establish a Community Aviation Center on the site of SRQ's former Air Traffic Control tower, which spans one acre. This center is envisioned as a hub for local non-profit aviation groups to unite and inspire the next generation about the wonders of aviation and potential career paths in this field.
How Did We Get Here?
A few years ago, the Manatee Technical College announced plans to add to their career course offerings, an Aviation Maintenance program. This has led to the construction of their new facility now under construction at SRQ.
A short time later, SRQ announced plans for a new school with an aviation theme on airport property just east of the airport. The new Team Success Charter School opened for the 2024/25 school year. Numerous news outlets have recognized SRQ's vision for as a growing center of aviation and the importance of youth education to fill the future needs of the local aviation work force.
For many years, EAA180 has placed a strong emphasis on youth programs through our Young Eagles flights, our Teen Build program, and Flight Scholarships. The SRQ Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol has had an even longer history with a Cadet program that emphasizes STEM subjects and introduces young people to the world of aviation. The SRQ Ladybugs Chapter of the Ninety-Nines International group of women pilots is a recent addition. They have funded aviation scholarships and have run numerous aviation education programs to expose opportunities to young people as well.
A series of meetings with all these organizations has brought everyone to the realization that we need to work as partners to succeed with the future aviation vision at SRQ. We have staunch support from Manatee Technical College, Team Success Charter School and SRQ Airport to proceed with plans for our facility. The things we have done for years are now even more important to bring the classroom to the runway. Our own facility will open the door for many more opportunities that we cannot now take advantage of due to a lack of space and a home base.

Where Are We Headed?
EAA Chapter 180 and Teen Aircraft of Manasota have teamed up with the SRQ Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol and the SRQ Ladybugs Chapter of the Ninety-Nines with the support of SRQ Airport, Manatee Technical College and Team Success Charter School to proceed with fundraising for our new facility.
This two-phase project includes a:
1) 60’ x 100’ hangar, where we can manage our Young Eagles and Teen Build programs, and
2) 40’ x 100’ administration building containing offices, meeting facilities, and aviation labs to be made available to local aviation-based organizations.
EAA Chapter 180 has a Letter of Intent from SRQ for us to build on the site of the old ATC tower on the north side of the airport upon our signing a lease.
Fundraising for Phase 1, the hangar, is underway with an anticipation of breaking ground Q1 2025.
We need to raise $400,000 to complete Phase 1.
