VMC Session that was held at Happy Hangar Café at Tampa North Airfield (X39.
Dear EAA 175 members,
For the May chapter meeting we changed things up a little with a new venue. The Happy Hangar café at Tampa North aerodrome proved to be a great setting for a meeting on Saturday, with a convenient meeting room, tasty breakfast food and lots of action right in front of from a variety of small planes and gyrocopters.
The topic for the session was how to handle engine failure on takeoff. A great discussion from the group included acknowledgement that this is an incredibly complex issue where the correct plan of action is influenced by pilot proficiency and comfort with the specific aircraft, aircraft type, and the specifics of the airfield we’re taking off from.
Although he was unable to attend, chapter VP Bud Yerly provided slides and a detailed article on the topic (with yours truly throwing in a slide on accident statistics). The slides and article are available on this page.
Tampa North was a memorable venue, and we’ll have to keep it in mind for future chapter meetings.
Regards,
Ryan McKeon (President, EAA Chapter 175)
