EAA Chapter Garage Damage Update
June 20, 2024
By Mike Newman - EAA Chapter 175 Treasurer and Board Member
Here is an update on the March 15 damage to the Chapter Garage by Ajax Paving Industries of Florida LLC:
June 20, 2024 HCAA authority has advised me that their goal is to replace or repair building 1300, but still there is the issue that the cost amount that was appraised by AJAX insurance company was too low. HCAA also advised me that it could be 2 or 3 months until the start of construction work.
In the aftermath of the accident on March 15 involving Ajax Paving Industries of Florida LLC and our EAA Chapter 175 workshop, Building 1300, the repercussions continue to affect our operations profoundly. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the damage inflicted upon our workshop has been substantial. This space served as the heart of our non-profit aviation education endeavors and fundraising initiatives, making its current state of disrepair all the more distressing. Educational projects slated for members, local students, and aviation enthusiasts have been put on hold indefinitely. Additionally, plans for acquiring shop equipment and CNC machinery crucial for our Fusion 360 course remain in limbo until the Hillsborough County Airport Authority resolves the matter with Ajax Paving. We extend our gratitude to the Airport Authority for their efforts in restoring the front parking lot and driveway to the workshop, as well as repaving Vandenberg Airport Road. However, the uncompleted road construction and major construction items obstructing apron access to the runway exacerbate our challenges. Additionally, the garage housing our member-owned tools and EAA 175 inventory of tools have been deemed unsafe, and condemned by the Hillsborough County Airport Authority, adding to our woes. As a chapter deeply rooted in the airport community since the early 1990s, celebrating over 60 years of existence, we are committed to replacing this vital structure and restoring access to the runway. We seek to engage with stakeholders, including potential financial supporters, to navigate through this challenging period and emerge stronger.
