EAA Chapter 1402

Sullivan, Mo - KUUV

A navigation event will take place on April 20 from 8:00-12:00 at Sullivan Regional Airport (KUUV). There will also be a breakfast starting at 7:00 a.m. (donations accepted).

1st place prize will be a FLASHFORGE Adventurer 5M Pro 3D Pinter! More information about the prize can be found here.

The navigation event will consist of a VFR cross-country between 70-120 NM to various checkpoints, relying on the use of pilotage and dead reckoning to determine time en route and fuel burn. Use of area navigation (RNAV) is prohibited. Teams of two (pilot and planner) are required for entry. All competition aircraft must be equipped with ADSB.

We have added an unlimited category, because of popular request, where use of electronics is allowed. However, competitors in this category will not by eligible for the prize.

There will be a pilot briefing starting at 8:00 a.m. to let pilots know how the event runs in more detail and give out all materials for planning.

Planners will be given 30 minutes to, without the use of ANY electronic devices, plan a VFR cross country across a pre-determined route. The planner will submit a navigation event flight plan form to the navigation judge specifying the estimated time to each checkpoint, the total time from departure to the final checkpoint, and the fuel required from engine start-up to engine shut-down.

Fuel penalty points will be assessed as follows:

  • If the actual fuel used is within 15% of fuel planned, no penalty points will be given.
  • If the actual fuel used is not within 15% of fuel planned, 10 penalty points will be assessed for each tenth-of-a-gallon of error.

Time penalty points will be assessed as follows:

  • Sixty points will be assessed for every minute of error between the estimated and actual total elapsed time from the start point of the course to the time over the last checkpoint (not over the airport).
  • Sixty points will be assessed for every minute of error between the estimated and actual time for each leg of the course.

Additional penalty points will be assessed failure to identify and/or overfly specified checkpoints.

An E6B may be a tool you use to do your planning for the course. Click here to find a tutorial on how to use one.
