EAA Chapter 180 of Manasota

Serving Sarasota / Bradenton, Florida

Youth Programs

EAA180 offers two wonderful youth programs:

1) Teen Build Program

The Teen Aircraft Factory of Manasota (TAFM) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Sarasota / Bradenton, Florida. Through this program, we mentor the next generation of pilots, mechanics and aviation professionals. The hands-on program pairs pilots and aviation enthusiasts with students to build light sport airplanes.  Our students, aged 14-18, are from area schools and diverse backgrounds. Each Saturday, ten to fifteen students, under the guidance of their volunteer aviation mentors come together to build a two-seat, light sport airplane over 24-36 months. Through this program, they have an opportunity to develop their Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) interest and skills including reading engineering drawings, using metal work tools, building production assemblies, and testing finalized components while staying organized and keeping documentation.

2) Young Eagles Program

Launched in 1992, the Young Eagles program has dedicated more than 25 years to giving youth ages 8–17 their first free ride in an airplane.  It’s the only program of its kind, with the sole mission to introduce and inspire kids in the world of aviation.  Today, more than 2 million young people have enjoyed a free introductory flight through the Young Eagles program. Typically, our local chapter flies over 200 youths each year.

TAFM helps sponsor the EAA Chapter 180 Young Eagle Program by offering complementary flights to area youths in the Sarasota/Bradenton area.  On the second Saturday of each month, from 8:00 - 11:00, we offer each child, between and teen the opportunity to experience the spirit of aviation by joining our volunteer pilots in a free flight from Sarasota Airport.
