Vintage Chapter 2

Houston Antique Flyers

About Us

EAA’s local chapters are about people, bringing together individuals interested in learning more about aviation as well as sharing their own knowledge.

Chapter members are involved in a variety of social and educational activities, including Young Eagles rallies, fly-ins, building seminars, and more, to build awareness in the community.

Welcome to VAA Chapter 2

Whether you fly, build, restore or simply enjoy vintage airplanes and aviation, you are welcome to attend our events and join our chapter. We are a group of aviation enthusiasts, aircraft restorers, and pilots who get together to share ideas, exchange information, promote vintage aviation, and support aviation youth activities like the EAA Young Eagles Program.  We tend to have a pretty good time doing these things.  You are welcome to join us at any of our meetings or events.

Our monthly gatherings are normally the fourth Sunday of the month at 2:00pm at David Wayne Hooks Airport in Spring, Texas.

As we continue to develop this site we will be including more detailed information of events as they are scheduled.

Chapter History - "the short version"

By our chapter number you can see that we were the second Antique & Classic chapter to be recognized by the EAA.  Though we had members from many towns and airports, our new home was Dry Creek Airport in Cypress, Texas, and we had a name, “Houston Antique Flyers”.

Many of the twenty-seven members at the time of charter application in 1973 were from EAA and the Antique Airplane Association.  By the time all the legal stuff was taken care of and our Chapter Charter was presented there were thirty-four members.  The Chapter is incorporated in the State of Texas and we have chapter bylaws, a chapter handbook, and a cool logo.

The chapter has four officer positions and multiple volunteer non-officer positions for membership, activities, and web site maintenance.  Like many chapters we are using our web site to provide our members with schedules and other information.  It is also a great place to share photos of aircraft and events that help define our almost four-decade history.  In past years we produced a chapter newsletter that won acclaim from Paul Poberezny, the President and Founder of EAA.

One area we take real pride in is the Young Eagles Program.  Our involvement goes back to the beginning of the program and continues today.  The first regional coordinator for our area and one of the program’s earliest pilots is a chapter member.  More than fifty chapter members have flown over 1500 youngsters.  We have been honored to fly youngsters from Texas Children’s Hospital, Big Brothers & Big Sisters, I Have a Dream, and multiple Boy Scout & Cub Scout groups.  The annual Dry Creek Young Eagles Rally flew over one hundred youngsters this past year.

From the earliest days to the present the chapter has either organized or supported fly-ins at all levels.  The Flying M Ranch “Reklaw” fly-in in east Texas is our home-away-from-home. As well as taking care of our home, if you had Sunday breakfast at the Ranch during the fly-in, it was cooked and served to you by our chapter.  Our chapter involvement in the Southwest Regional Fly-In goes back decades.  We have worked on the transition teams each time the event moved.  We have built and provided equipment, provided the judging of aircraft, coordinated some dinner programs, and helped coordinate with the Chambers of Commerce.

As you would expect, the annual EAA AirVenture Fly-In and Convention at Oshkosh, Wisconsin has been part of our chapter activity since the forming of the chapter.  Each year you can find chapter members at all of the venues.  Several of our members have been volunteers for many years in the Vintage area as well as the fly-in in general.  A long-time chapter member is one of the aircraft judges for the fly-in.

Vintage aircraft define the history of aviation.  Preserving them is very important, and our chapter and the VAA are committed to that goal.
