EAA Chapter 879 (Durham NC and the Surrounding Area)
Dan Bryan originally built the airfield by converting farmland into runways 6/24 and runway 14/32. Sterling Gann purchased the airport years later and renamed it Lake Ridge Aero Park (8NC8), and started EAA Chapter 879 in the 1970s (for more information about our chapter's home airport visit the LRAP website).
Today, EAA Chapter 879 host regular monthly meetings, breakfast and lunch events, and other aviation-related activities as opportunities arise. Chapter 879 also provides support and resources to local pilots, offering workshops and training programs to enhance their skills and knowledge. Finally, the chapter provides a platform for anyone interested in aviation, including flight simmers and non-pilots, to connect with a vibrant aviation community, in and around Durham, NC.
Our chapter is currently led by Ben Plowman, our President. Additionally, we have several members who serve in leadership and support roles, including Carl Jensen who is our immediate past President, Randy Smith who acts as our Technical Counselor, Stephen West and Sam Patellos together who coordinates our Young Eagles program, Frank White who is responsible for our newsletter and serves as our webmaster, and Chet Orton who manages our mailing list.
