Chapter 237

Anoka County Airport, Blaine, MN

Flight Simulator Overview

EAA

Our highly functional flight simulator provides chapter members with the ability to practice both VFR and IFR flight experiences.  The system includes three large screen monitors for the 'out the window' view and a touch screen monitor for a high quality, realistic aircraft instrument panel operation.  The pilot's operating controls include a Honeycomb Alpha yoke, a Saitek/Logitech throttle quadrant, a modified Saitek (Cessna style) pitch trim wheel, CH rudder pedals, a custom 12-button, Arduino-based view control panel with an attached Cessna style flap control lever and a dual-knob control called a 'Knobster'.

Our simulator is much like the Gleim Virtual Cockpit BATD system.  We use many of the same cockpit controls and peripherals as Gleim and both are based on the X-Plane software.  While our simulator is not an FAA approved training device like the Gleim, it still provides many of the same training opportunities and flight experiences.

The simulator software is based on X-Plane 12 from Laminar Research for driving the three monitors and Air Manager from Sim Innovations for the touch screen instrument panel.  These two software components communicate with each other to provide a realist flight experience.  Both software packages can support multiple types of aircraft but the flight simulator is currently configured for a single engine Cessna 172SP.  Use the following links for more information.
