We are the Experimental Aircraft Association chapter at Peter O. Knight Airport in Tampa, Florida.
The airport is worth a sentence of its own, because it is the reason people fall in love with this place. Peter O. Knight sits on the southern tip of Davis Islands with Hillsborough Bay on three sides, four minutes from downtown Tampa, and a world away from it. It opened in the mid-1930s as Tampa's municipal airport and carried the city's airline service for a decade before the airlines moved to longer runways. It is still a working field: two runways, about a hundred based aircraft, a flight school, and a seaplane basin from an era when that was how you arrived in Florida.
EAA was founded by people who build their own airplanes, and that is still half of what we do. Our members build, restore, maintain and fly, and the chapter exists so that nobody has to figure it out alone.
The other half is the part we care most about. We take kids flying.
Aviation Pathways runs on the fourth Saturday of each month, September through May, for young people aged 7 to 18, built on EAA AeroEducate and designed to be social first. Young Eagles gives a young person their first flight, free, in the right seat, with a logbook entry at the end. Our radio-controlled program teaches building and flying with something you can hold in two hands, and our flight simulator lets anyone take the controls with nothing at stake.
None of this happens without volunteers, and most of them are not pilots. We need those who are good with young people, good with tools, good with a spreadsheet, or simply willing to be useful on a Saturday morning.
