Chapter 1516

Laconia, NH

Glenn Smith Piper J-3 Cub

A little background on the project. I bought this J-3 in 1973 and flew her until I removed the wings and placed her in storage to await restoration. The aircraft is a 1939 Piper J-3 and is referred to as a pre-WWII design. Post war brought design changes that Piper incorporated in their J-3 and subsequent PA-18 Super Cub. I have made some of these changes to my J-3 e.g., stronger landing gear, improved elevator and it’s trim control system and improved windshield and skylight superstructure. My aircraft left the factory with a Lycoming 65 hp power plant. The Civil Air Patrol owned this aircraft during the mid-1950’s and upgraded the power plant to a Continental 75 hp which I will overhaul.
