The story starts in the 1950's when a few people formed a group to support each other in their love of aviation. Specifically, these folks were most enthusiastic about building their own airplanes. This little band has now grown into the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA).
What most people do not know is that until the 1930's, most aircraft WERE homebuilt. It was later that federal regulations succeeded in all but erasing the right to design and build your own aircraft. The EAA organization is still working to ensure the freedom to build and fly one’s own aircraft and also to ensure safety of the general population.
By the early 1960's, many groups located across the country had formed their own local chapters. Paul Poberezny, founder of EAA, and the original group in Milwaukee determined they should separate the organization’s management from the original group. By this time, there were many chapters around the globe. The lowest chapter number available to the Milwaukee group was 18 since the original Chapter 18 had disbanded. Paul remained an active member of Chapter 18 for many years. Today, a few members still hint at the idea that we are really Chapter 0 (Zero)!
Chapter 18 meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm except for October and December. The October meeting is usually a dinner banquet. Chapter meetings are quite lively. The chapter has a board of directors which meets separately to discuss business. Board activities are reported in the general chapter meeting and printed in the monthly newsletter. Limiting "operations" chatter to the board meetings makes the general membership meetings more enjoyable for everyone.
In addition to our regular meetings, Chapter 18 gives back to the community through activities like the Young Eagles program. This program was formed to help children, ages 8 to 17, gain an interest in aviation. Chapter 18 also holds regular Young Eagles events.
Chapter 18 has a reputation as a builder’s chapter which is a rank of honor. This means our membership has many projects in various stages of completion. We are one busy bunch of guys!
Our web site gallery contains lists of many current and historical homebuilt aircraft. Please take a look! Most members welcome questions and comments about their projects. If you prefer, you may send your questions to info@eaa18.org and we will pass them along to the best available person to answer them.
In recent years we have slowly transitioned our meeting location from the CAP hanger at Timmerman Airport to Waukesha County Airport (Crites Field) in the main terminal. 2525 Aviation Drive, Waukesha, WI 53188 See our Event Calendar for more details.
