Flying - Fun - Friendship - Food

The Capital Area Light Flyers Club [CALF] was started in 1974 by a few Ultralight pioneers when people were adding small engines and props to their hang gliders. Our members come from the Baltimore Washington area. Our club is located between Frederick Airport [FDK] and Libertyville, Maryland. We have Light Sport and Ultralight pilots, including Power Paragliders (PPG). Our numbers have increased and decreased since then several times, and some of us are getting older, but we still have younger members joining us as we thrive on flying, fun, and food.

We meet the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm to enjoy a potluck supper prepared by our members. Our club business meeting starts at 7:00pm where we discuss flying safety, our next fly-in, what's new, and other topics of common interest to members.

  • We sponsor six fly-ins a year from May through October. Click on our Events Calendar for fly-ins during our flying season.
  • We like to frequent a number of nice grass airstrips in North Central Maryland and Southern Pennsylvania that are outside of the restricted airspace around Camp David and outside the Mode C Veil that surrounds Dulles, Baltimore and Washington airports.
  • We participate in the Maryland by Air program sponsored by the Maryland Airport Managers Association through which one can earn a very nice leather jacket after visiting a bunch of airports and airport museums around the state and attending safety meetings.

Come find us, check us out, and join in the flying, fun, friendship and food!
