2023 International Aerobatics Day

International Aerobatics Day Celebration

The chapter enjoyed a good turn out of aerobatic enthusiasts at Romeo State A/P on June 24. Unfortunately, weather was marginal until early afternoon, preventing many of the aircraft getting to Romeo. Wayne Buescher provided the audience of some 20 guests with an overview of IAC and aerobatic competition. Later in the afternoon when the ceiling lifted, Hugo flew a demonstration flight presenting the Unlimited known sequence. Before closing the event, guests Pat Hernandez and Scott McDonald arrived in a Game Bird 1. Chapter member Gino Raffin arrived with his family to show off  his  Ford Model A classic car. Surprise visitor, Paul West, who was an active chapter member during the 80ties and 90ties, made the trip to Romeo and rejoined the chapter as a member.

Chapter 88 had a great turn-out

It was a beautiful day for the acro planes flying into Romeo State airport. Altogether about 40 participants - pilots, chapter and community members made it to the celebration. The program started out with a video presentation of members flying aerobatic sequences followed by a presentation titled "The World of Aerobatic Competition" by Hugo Ritzenthaler. The afternoon was reserved for aerobatic demonstration flights by Chapter 88 members. Both, Jason Ledbetter in his Bücker Jungmann and Dan Unger in his Pitts S1S  flew the 2022 Sportsman sequence. Wayne Buescher in his Staudacher F600S demonstrated the Intermediate sequence and Hugo Ritzenthaler in his Staudacher Pitts S1E the Unlimited program. Joel Colombo brought his Stearman and Victor Adamko his Decathlon for a static display.

Door prizes

EAA

Due to extreme weather conditions on June 26, IAC Chapter 88 was forced to move the National Aerobatics Day celebration to July 3, which turned out to be a very successful day with sunshine and many aerobatic and non-aerobatic airplanes onsite as well as a great number of pilots and non-pilots attending at Romeo State Airport, where the chapter has a permanent Aerobatic Practice Area over the airport.

Unfortunately, due to change in date, some pilots were unable, for many different reasons, to attend. Don Forton for example, who flies his acro mount out of his private strip, still had the runway covered with inches of water from the heavy rainfall a week before.

Aerobatic promotion material and membership sign-up forms were made available. Following a picture taking session, the chapter continued with aerobatic demonstration flights. Copies of the sequences each pilot flew were distributed amongst the group with chapter members explaining and commending the figures flown. Jason Ledbetter flew the Sportsman Known in his Bücker Jungmann, Wayne Buescher flew the Intermediate Known in his Staudacher F600 and Hugo flew the Unlimited Known in his Staudacher Pitts S-1E.

At the conclusion of the flight demonstration part of the celebration, a door prize drawing was held that included IAC promotional items donated by Hugo. We also would like to thank Gino and Jim for their generous donations.

The chapter would like to thank everyone for joining the National Aerobatics Day celebration. A special thank you to the volunteers making this special day a success.
