About Us

 Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 939
Chapter 939 of the Experimental Aircraft Association, (EAA), is a 501-C-3, Educational Charity, located in Southport, NC. As one of approximately 900 active chapters in the Unites States, Chapter 939 and its members help to comprise the second largest volunteer member related organization in the world, dedicated to promoting all aspects of aviation. Our Mission Statement includes not only promoting aviation but strives to serve as a bridge between the non-flying public and the activity of flight. The EAA includes members of all ages and all walks of life. Members are pilots as well as aircraft owners, while many are simply aviation enthusiasts.
Educational programs include the Young Eagle Program where pilots are encouraged to provide a free introductory flight to youngsters, ages 8 to 17. Since its inception on 1992, volunteer pilots have provided over 2.2 million youngsters the opportunity to go flying. Chapter 939 pilots have accounted for over 3,000 of those flights.
At its roots, individuals building their own aircraft, now called simply called homebuilts, were the reason for the formation of the EAA. Established in 1953, a group of former WWII pilots got together and, working with the FAA, CAA back then, were able to establish a new classification of aircraft which would be become known as “Experimentals”. Today, over 33,000 Experimental aircraft have been licensed by the FAA.
Besides homebuilding and Young Eagles, EAA, at the national level, has many outreach programs, one of which is the Air Tours Program, which tours several historic aircraft to chapter events. At its headquarters in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, each year EAA hosts the world’s largest gathering of airplanes and airplane enthusiasts, known as AirVenture Oshkosh. A week long member convention also open to the general public, the event will draw up to 10,000 aircraft and 600,000 attendees.
EAA is all about the spirit of aviation and at its heart are the volunteers who make it all possible.
