Ray Aviation Scholarship

EAA Ray Aviation Scholarship

The EAA Ray Aviation Scholarship is a scholarship program that is funded by the Ray Foundation, managed by EAA, and administered through the EAA Chapter network. Through the generous support of the Ray Foundation, EAA provides up to $11,000 to deserving youths to help cover their flight training expenses, totaling $1,800,000 in annual scholarship funding.

EAA chapters apply for a scholarship, and if approved, the chapter then awards the scholarship to a youth or young adult to help them become a pilot. In addition to scholarship funding, the chapter also helps mentor the scholar and supports them on their path to becoming a licensed pilot.

This scholarship is available for candidates 16-19 years old who are pursuing a Private Pilot or Sport Pilot certificate, and for candidates 15-19 years old who are pursuing a Glider Pilot certificate.

EAA Ray Aviation Scholarship

EAA awarded Chapter 501 the opportunity to mentor a Ray scholarship candidate in 2021, 2022 and 2023.  Beck Youngberg, our 2021 Ray scholarship winner, achieved his PPL rating on May 3rd, 2022. Flight training for our 2022 winner Joshua Puerzer was interrupted by strings of bad weather. Completion of his Ray flight training then became an impossibility in the required timespan due to the demands of the freshman engineering program at the University of Pittsburgh.  Brandon Norrell has been awarded the balance of the 2022 Ray award and in November 2023 he has already soloed with Sky Training, LLC, at Greenwood Lake Airport. The 2023 Ray flight training award was granted to Reva Mathankar. Reva is already close to being cleared to solo under the direction of a flight instructor at Lincoln Park Airport's Aero Safety Training, Ltd.
