About Us

EAA’s local chapters are about people, bringing together individuals interested in learning more about aviation as well as sharing their own knowledge.

EAA Chapter 129 History

EAA Chapter 129 was officially chartered in 1962, in Bloomington/Normal, IL.  Our chapter was really an off-shoot of EAA Chapter 29 in Champaign, IL which pre-dates our group.  It began with a treasury of $15.00, and has expanded both in membership and activity over the years. The Chapter has its own faclity, located on the Central Illinois Regional Airport.  It is located on the west side of the General Aviation ramp, on Hangar Row "F".  The hangar address is F-15.  The 45' x 45' hangar was constructed in 1995 by many years of fund raising, member contributions, donations, and proceeds from fly-ins and other gatherings.

Our membership is very active in aviation.  We have members that are learning to fly, those that have been flying for years, some that are retired from active flying, and those that fly professionally.  Our interests are wide ranging.  Within the Chapter we have GA production aircraft owners, many flying experimentals, a number of experimental projects, warbird fans, restorers, and ultralight and glider pilots.  Among our group we have a wide variety of experienced craftsmen, proficient in rag and tube construction, composites, all-metal, and wood.  Because of the wide age range and experience of our members, it is truly a treasure trove of knowledge and experience.

We gather frequently.  On EVERY Saturday, our members gather at our hangar from 7-9 a.m. to visit, have some breakfast, and enjoy being at the airport.  On the 3rd Thursday of each month, we meet at our hangar facility for our monthly meeting.  It consists of a business session, and a program.  In addition, it frequently includes a "5 Minute Project Video" that features a member's aircraft project, or some other noteworthy activity or accomplishment.

We are strong participants in the EAA AirVenture.  Each year, members go to Oshkosh to prepare the grounds prior to the event.  In the past several years, we have been the group that mows the grass just prior to the event.  And, we attend the actual event in record numbers.  It is not unusual for more than a third of our membership (now at about 120) to be at Oshkosh for the annual event.  We are always seeking new members.  And, you don't have to be a pilot, builder, or have any specific aviation credentials to join us.  If you love aviation like we do......YOU'RE QUALIFIED for membership!
