What is Build-A-Pilot?

Build-A-Pilot, Corp. is a comprehensive aviation scholarship fund and mentorship program. It is classified by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) public charity, and is based in the lower Hudson Valley of New York State. This fund was created for young individuals who have a dream of flying, but do not have the financial means to pay for primary training and achieve their private pilot certificate.

 Who will fly the Airplane?

To some, flight has simply become an impossible dream.

There is a well publicized commercial pilot shortage. Although the commercial aviation industry is beginning to take steps to correct that, there are many reasons for the shortage; higher costs, a shrinking middle-class, and growing inaccessibility to airports due to security. There has been a growing detrimental effect on the whole of aviation, not just commercial services.

Run entirely by uncompensated volunteers since its inception, Build-A-Pilot is a grassroots organization dedicated to providing scholarship funds, mentorship assistance and encouragement to motivated and deserving youth of New York State’s Lower Hudson Valley region who aspire to be pilots.

More than just a gateway to a potential career, Build-A-Pilot, Corp. seeks to not only provide scholarship funds and mentorship, but also to instill a lifelong enthusiasm and love of aviation. We strive to build young aviators who will earn their pilot’s certificate and open the door to a lifelong commitment to the aviation community. This program is intended to provide scholarship funding and pilot mentorship to young individuals who possess and demonstrate through the application process, an enthusiasm and passion for aviation, and financial need.

The Build-A-Pilot scholarship covers 50% of the cost to attain the ASEL private pilot certificate. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate enthusiasm for aviation, motivation, and perseverance through a series of three tasks as part of a “competition style” scholarship application process, and the financial resources to fund half of the cost of training. After being awarded the scholarship, each Build-A-Pilot recipient is guided and mentored by Build-A-Pilot volunteers the entire way while becoming a certificated pilot.
